Mission

To publish punk-informed books by punk-informed writers that challenge conventions in all formats of literature. Punk isn’t a just a style of music, it’s a way of life. Flex Your Head Press champions books that are in the spirit of living life our way, every time, all the time. If your mission aligns with our mission—and we hope it does—you want readers to be exposed to topics and voices that are misrepresented and underrepresented in our homogenized reality. Plus, you’re an amazing writer, and your book’s going to rule, and we want to put in front of readers who think it rules. Because it does, right?

Motto

DIY=DIT. Do-it-yourself=do-it-together. It’s your book. In the event that Flex Your Head Press chooses to publish it, you will be involved in the process every step of the way. You will be kept up to date and treated fairly throughout our relationship. You will have editorial and design input and 100% veto power. You will have unlimited access to books at cost to sell through your own channels, at readings, on your website, to stores in your area (if you like), and, of course, family and friends. Royalty rates will be fair and paid regularly. Flex Your Head will do everything possible to get your book into stores, libraries, and readers’ very own hands via grassroots distributors, wholesalers, and mailorder booksellers, including AK Press (US), PM Press (US), and North 49 (Canada). Yes, these ethical partners do sell to the book-industry monoliths (you know who we’re talking about), but their focus is on independent bookstores, mailorder, and direct sales. So, yay, right? Without getting too soapbox-y, we believe the current publishing industry is broken. Writers are treated like commodities. Book giants are reaping the rewards while small presses and emerging writers are expected to lick the spoils. We may not sell enough books to make you any significant amount of money (if that’s what you’re after), but we can do our best to make sure your book finds excited hands and eager eyes and doesn’t rot in a warehouse somewhere.

Flex Your Head Press publishes creative nonfiction, literary journalism, literary fiction, poetry, hybrid, and any and all experimental forms of writing. We’re mostly interested in manuscripts tackling the subjects of underground music, alternate forms of mental health, and taking the piss out of pop culture. We’re also keen on memoirs and essay collections that drop jaws and anything to do with DIY culture and the punk rock ethos of rebellion, resistance, and reclamation. If you’ve never considered yourself a “punk” in any aspect of your life, this may not be the right press for you, but you can still try! You might be “punk” and not even know it!

Submissions are easy, because the last thing we want you to do after writing a (fucking badass) manuscript is jump through a bunch of unnecessary and exclusionary hoops. There are no gatekeepers here.

Please email flexyourheadpress@gmail.com the following two things:
-A short, casual email introducing yourself and your project.
-The manuscript.

Easy!

We’ll get back to you right away with a confirmation of receipt, because you deserve respect. And then you’ll have to wait about a month for us to get back to you with an answer. Enough of this 6-12 months bullshit. If you need to withdraw your submission for any reason, please let us know right away. Don’t leave us hanging.

We are so thankful that you are entrusting us with your work. We look forward to reading it!

Scream Therapy is a raw and vibrant account of the punk universe, and its integral relationship with mental health. You may recoil at times, but you’ll envy the energy and ultimate clarity of Schreurs’ writing, as he makes an impassioned plea for community as a response to the ostracism too many people with mental health conditions face.”
